Located within the same building, nursery children attend pre-school classes on a daily basis, where they receive structured activities and more focused assistance, are provided with homework and have holidays just like their older brothers and sisters at school. Our programme is based on the Scottish Government's 3-18 Curriculum For Excellence. As such, we promote an open, warm, friendly learning environment that includes development of expressive arts, health and well being, languages, maths, technology and so on.
These elements are intertwined into everyday experiences whereby the children are always learning through play. Staff monitor and assess progress regularly with a view to keeping up to date with every child's needs, developmentally, emotionally and physically. This also serves as a transition tool for communicating with teachers when the child is ready to go to school.
The children enjoy junior maths, simple geography, colours, shapes and sizes, basic science models as well as different projects, e.g. French, German, music and movement, multiculture, world peoples and festivities, to mention a few. The children help design and partake in the annual Christmas Show and there is a graduation ceremony at the end of each year to mark the departure of those who are going to school the following August.
One of our goals is to prepare the children for their first day at primary school and to make the transition as smoothly as possible. This is done with continual interaction between staff, parents and children.
Every child is entitled to pre-school education from the school term following his or her third birthday with the cost being met by the local authority.
At this stage of nursery life, group and personal developmental programmes are implemented into the everyday curriculum. Activities and experiences are designed and executed in light of the children's own specific developmental needs. As such, every child is monitored and assessed in view of their abilities, requirements, aspirations, likes and dislikes.
The idea of good citizenship is introduced; the children develop self confidence, respect for themselves and others. We incorporate arts and crafts, cookery, books and story telling. The education side is developed by introducing the concept of numbers, word structure, shapes, feelings and so on. and by the time this stage is completed the children will be well rounded individuals with marked personalities and a valued contribution to make.
With a dedicated, long serving staff team, play is used to achieve and learn at every available opportunity. As the ante pre-school element becomes more defined in this year (3-4 year olds), nursery takes on a whole new dimension for staff and parents, whilst the children are none the wiser, continuing to spend their days finding fun and laughter, games and excitement. Staff work to ensure that each child is making progress towards the important transition of going to school after their pre-school year (4-5 year olds). This last stage of nursery is extremely productive and rewarding for all involved, none more so than the children themselves.
The Disney Club, for 2 to 3 year olds, has a large attractive activity area presented with all mod cons, cosy corners and soft play offering a more structured curriculum. Here, our children are introduced to experiences that help encourage concentration, sharing and working together. They begin to master early social skills with lots of group play, singing, story telling and art and craftwork, all promoted through fun and games. This is where the educational element of nursery life begins to kick in at its simplest level. Colour corners, computers, projectors, music systems, interest tables and environmental displays are all in place beside traditional resources. FUN is the name of the game, yet they never know they're learning! Our Disney Clubbers rule the roost, fine tuning their sense of mischief, adventure and showing off their individual personalities along the way. At this age, they are really finding their voices, stringing sentences together, forming lasting relations with each other and staff. They have the whole world in front of them, and nothing stops them from finding out all about it! We are there to help!
Staff in this area have a wonderful job! Watching little personalities unfold daily, there are always wonderful stories to be told of the toddler age group! They are full of themselves... they demand attention at every turn, they want to perform, to find out, play, learn, and tell others exactly how it should be done! It is a glorious age, and always displays a wide range of characters... the shy ones, the boisterous ones, the leaders, the charmers, the bossy ones and the sensible ones!! Joyous!
Drop them off and watch them go! Ask any of our children if they're having fun....if you can catch them! Come in and have a chat with us. See what your little one is missing out on!
The baby room is a large, bright space with a homely atmosphere. The wide selection of toys encourages sensory, emotional and social development that any baby will take delight in. There is a separate changing area and rest/sleep room. Decorated in warm tones, this room gives all our babies a sense of comfort and peace, essential for a contented stay at nursery. Easily adapted however, at activity time this room transforms into a wonderland of new experiences, both visually and physically, facilitated with every toy available, for every stage of development, each child is always thoroughly occupied... baby climbing apparatus; movement and movement resources; painting, play-doh and gloop; singing, reading and musical instruments; Treasure Basket and Heuristic Play, amongst other things, providing valuable learning from the most natural materials available. Our babies are always happy, smiling, laughing and the centre of attention! They thrive on playing together, watching, listening and learning from their peers, living life to the full! This is where it all begins!
